Loc Lac's Fractured Past: A New Generation Empty Loc Lac's Fractured Past: A New Generation

Post by Adjectutor Wed Jul 09, 2014 10:36 am

Hello everyone.  I am shifting focus onto one of my RPG ideas and am officially starting the sign ups page for Loc Lac's Fractured Past.

-

The RPG takes place in the Monster Hunter World about 20 years after the timeline of Monster Hunter 3/Tri.  This will take place in established city of Tanzia.  Originally a small port used as a base of operations by The Hunter's Guild as well as a source of bustling trade, Port Tanzia soon began to benefit from and develop to fit the needs of many people fractured by the toll of strong monsters in outlying areas, especially along the Great Desert.  The city of Tanzia stands tall, a booming land of Guild activity, trading, business success and cultural festivities.  In it's short history Tanzia has become a landmark that almost everyone knows about and most have visited for one reason or another.  It is now also a place where many hunters call home.

Tanzia has been transformed and developed to provide a place currently much farther away from monster activity for the many evacuees of recent times.  Many small villages and camps have been obliterated from the map, despite their longevity and notoriety.  Along with these encampments, the great city of Loc Lac deep within the Great Desert was the only major city in the region's history ever to have been wiped out. The city fell to ruin 20 year ago.  It has been rumored that the city was attacked by a Deviljho and erased within a matter of hours.  Many were startled by this suggestion because many Deviljhos have been encountered by the Guild with at least a few hunters well equipped to handle them.  Nonetheless, the city fell.  Few who witnessed the destruction of Loc Lac first hand lived on to tell about it.  Survivors were almost exclusively those who were evacuated immediately after the monster attacked.  Many mysteries surround the events of Loc Lac, and the Guild has suffered many losses because of the events of this day.  It remains unknown why Loc Lac was not able to repulse its attacker, how the city fell in a matter of hours, and why the guild has made no efforts to rebuild the once grand city of Loc Lac.  The ruins of the city are off limits by the Guild.  It is suggested that monster activity in the area has been growing to extreme levels and that hunters not venture near the ruins for any reason.

Now, twenty years later, a new generation of hunters is rising up.  This year, many fledglings have registered with the guild, the largest boom in new hunters since Loc Lac's founding over a century before.

This RPG will be a vanilla themed Monster Hunter RPG.  The hunter you create will be a fresh hunter, part of the up and coming new generation.  You will be undertaking an adventure from meager beginnings and will focus on a few things that will develop over time.

1. Discovery of G-Class (Power class that has not been officially discovered by the Guild yet due to the recency of monsters evolving to face the influx of dangerous threats such as hunters.)

2. Uncovering the mystery of Loc Lac City

3. Figuring out what has caused ultra-aggressive multitude of monsters to popular the Great Desert and surrounding area and dealing with the potential threat it creates.

This is an ambitious RPG that will probably move forward slowly, focusing on hunts, plot development, and Guild activity.

You will have to create a new hunter with new hunting equipment.  That means regulation hunting equipment that can be purchased in any game without materials.  You can get creative with this if you'd like, but you have to run that by me so that I can give it a green light.  The point is that you're going to be the exact opposite of God-status.

Your hunter doesn't have to be a young guy (despite the whole new generation thing), but you should specify a reason for why you are becoming a hunter.  You are also welcome to have some sort of connection to Loc Lac city (parents/siblings that died in the attack and what have you) and are encouraged to use your character's bio as an opportunity to tie him/her into the aspects of the story.

During the RPG, all fights and significant situations in the story will require the player to roll for % of outcome.  Essentially, when you decide to make your character do something that can not be done easily and effortlessly, I will roll dice via an online dice-rolling software to determine how effective and successful your character's efforts are.  I will then describe the outcome based on the results.  For example:  You are sneaking up on a rathalos to achieve a preemptive strike in order to give yourself an early advantage.  You post the following:  X Hunter sneaks up behind the Rathalos and swings the greatsword at its tail, taking advantage of the situation.  I roll and determine that you have an outcome of 100%.  The resulting post would go something like this:  X Hunter successfully clears the gap between them and lands a clean slice through the tail of the Rathalos, managing to sever it immediately.  While instead, in the event that I roll and determine that you have an outcome of 0%, the resulting post would go something like this: X Hunter trips over a tree root as he gets closer to the Rathalos, tumbling to the ground and alerting the monster to his presence.  The Rathalos, threatened and scared, turns to face the hunter and jumps back into the air, sizzling X Hunter with point black fireball hitting him directly. (So on so forth).  Anything above 50% is more of a positive result than a negative result, and landing anything below 50% is more of a negative result than a positive one.  The degree will vary by the size of your outcome's %

Your character must include all of this information:

Name:           (Last names are preferred but not required)

Race:            (You don't have to be human.  I probably won't have to police this much if at all.)  The race you choose will
                   impact your fighting style reasonably.

Age:              (You're likely to be between 17-30)

Bio:               This is your opportunity to make the story revolve around your character a little.  Provide a brief history
about your character, what lead them to become a hunter, and what happened over the course of the last
                   twenty years.

Appearance:   Specify General appearance information about your hunter.  Armor is not all that important as it will
obviously change as you progress as a hunter.  Share anything that might stand out about your character,
hair, height, weight, and other characteristics such as scars, missing limbs and anything else that you
would like to make your character unique.

Weapon:        Pick a weapon type and focus on developing it.  You can also have a secondary weapon class to specialize
in, but may not bring two large weapons with you into combat.  Everyone is welcome to having small
tertiary weapons to back them up in the case of their main weapon being unusable or unreachable.

Best Trait      Pick a combat aspect that you would call your greatest trait.  You can choose between Strength,
Endurance, Awareness, Dexterity, and Intelligence.  The best trait will become a heightened ability that will
permanently increase your success rate when attempting actions relevant to the trait.

Worst Trait   Pick a combat aspect that will be your character's worst trait.  You can choose between Strength,
Endurance, Awareness, Dexterity, and Intelligence.  The worst trait will become a vulnerability that will
permanently decrease your success rate when attempting actions relevant to the trait.

Anything Else  Other necessary information I may have missed.

Carrying over a question from the original topic on Minegarde:

Yes, there will be permadeath in this RPG.  However, it will not be very common.  You will have to get some really unlucky rolls to (or to put yourself in some really reckless positions) for your character to end up dead.

Yes, you can use 4th generation Monster Hunter stuff.  However, I still have some extra research to do to be able to say with confidence that I am solid on 4th generation mechanics, equipment, and lore.

Also, I have been doing some research of the monster hunter world map, and based on my findings, it seems that the region in which Moga, Loc Lac, and Tanzia fall under (centered around the Great Desert), is a region all its own, relatively far off from the locations of the 1st and 2nd Generations.  As another person did, you may start your character in a location like Pokke or Kokoto, but they will be far away from home at Tanzia.

If you have any questions about the RPG or have issues that you'd like to have settled before we begin don't hold you tongue.  Now would be the best time to voice them, as I can alter the form of the RPG to prevent the issues from negatively impacting the fun of the RPG.

No worries. This won't be starting for a bit anyhow. I'm waiting on a few people to return from temporary absences.

Loc Lac's Fractured Past: A New Generation Empty Re: Loc Lac's Fractured Past: A New Generation

Post by BizzarreCoyote Mon Jul 14, 2014 12:03 pm

Name: Roy Alomar

Race: Human

Age: 20

Bio: Roy was raised in the cold air of the Pokke mountain range, in a town not far from the small village that takes the same name. As many hunters had come and go from that village, Roy was also spurred on to be one of those heroes he often saw walking right down the street.

His family was torn. Roy's mother wanted him to continue on their family trade of, well...trade. His father, a retired hunter himself, was behind the young man every step of the way, for a time.

Roy is fairly built, as his father stressed a balanced training regiment for the soon-to-be hunter.

His father was killed by a Blangonga not long after the start of this training, which only pushed Roy to perform better. He poached that same Blangonga a month later, after tracking its movements and the finding the location of a particularly loose snow sheet. A swift avalanche wiped it and its entire pack off the face of the planet.

His mother was completely against the idea of the young man being a hunter at all, and disowned him when he left for Tanzia Harbor. She still does not contact him, even after a year.

He has a brother and sister, both younger than he is. He has heard of the disaster surrounding Loc Lac only briefly, as the subject was considered too distant to truly be worth much talk. It was never discussed in his school classes, due to its irrelevance. Only just now is he learning of the destruction.

The hunter absolutely hates the muggy atmosphere of the jungles and swamps, but feels energized and freed by the crisp, dry air in the tundras and mountains. As a result, the humid areas wear him down more quickly than they should, whereas Roy could practically spend an eternity in the mountain peaks and chilly desert nights.
---

Appearance: 5' 9" (1.75 m), with shiny silver hair and emerald green eyes. His skin is very pale from his family's history in the Pokke Mountains, though darkens easily in the bright tropical sun. Has a thin, vertical scar running across his left eyelid from a monster attack while guarding a caravan, though the scar is shallow enough to not impair his vision.

Weapon: SnS (Secondary: Senryukon (fast, gauntlet-type weapons)). Both Iron.

Armor: Thick, padded vest that provides little defense against even Jaggi claws, but does not hamper mobility.

Best Trait: Intelligence (Reading all day tends to make the mind quite sharp, and as that's his favorite past-time, his mind is as sharp as his blade.)

Worst Trait: Strength (While his swordplay is adequate, Roy neglected strength training in favor of map reading and tactics. Thankfully, his weapons of choice don't require much, favoring tactical pinpoint strikes rather than brute strength.)

Misc: Enjoys nothing more than a good book to read, and will often spend hours reading, completely quiet and to himself. For that reason, his hunting pack has at least three books, two of which he's probably never read before. Unfortunately, this costs him a little in situational awareness, being too distracted with his book to keep an eye out around him.

He is, coincidentally, reserved and very 'to himself', preferring to keep a professional relationship with people at best.

Loc Lac's Fractured Past: A New Generation Empty Re: Loc Lac's Fractured Past: A New Generation

Post by 17dragonboy Sat Jul 19, 2014 12:14 am

I intend to join. I have some questions though.

Regarding equipment:
Do you allow custom weapons?
Namely, weapons that do not fit into one of the standard weapon types (e.g. chain and weight).

Shall we include starting armor? (Just to establish if it’s light/medium/heavy type.)
Is custom armor allowed?

Regarding stats:
What’s the difference between speed and dexterity? (A concern of mine is that one is redundant/unnecessary.)

Would I be correct to assume that strength is related to damage output, while endurance is how well you can take damage?

Would you be opposed to a player taking two positive traits and two negative traits?
Would you be opposed to a player taking no positive traits and no negative traits?

I’d like to wait for others to make their characters (so that I can work around them to create diversity), but I get the feeling that won’t happen.

Regarding your questions, db:

You are allowed to use a custom weapon.  It just has to be a sensible weapon that is properly used.  Go for it.

Armor at this point is almost irrelevant.  If you want to include your armor so be it.  It's going to be weak armor that you will probably upgrade or change very soon after we begin.

Stats:  You're right, I do see them as redundant stats.  Originally I had dexterity as more of a hand/footwork specialty skill while speed was focused on how quickly you can move and react to things.  But I do believe that they would be a little weak as separate traits.  I have therefore, removed the speed stat, fusing it with Dexterity. In its place I have included the stat Awareness, which I had forgotten to include previously. This stat simply has to do with noticing what's going on around you, being able to hear and see or track monsters instinctively, and just being more likely to catch things that most people won't. It will definitely help you in situations.

You are allowed to eliminate your negative stat by foregoing your positive trait.  However, if you were to request two positive traits, you would have to accept three negative traits.  Your character will essentially suck at everything besides the two stats that he/she decided to specialize in.  It's a catch 22 I suppose.

Also, go ahead and wait a bit longer if you'd like.  I'm going to talk to a few other people about potentially joining this RP.  I figure about 4-5 people would be perfect.

(Spoilers are just for organization, not secrecy.)

Name: Havel Smough Seath Gwyn (First, Middle, First-Last, Second-Last)
Generally introduces himself just as “Havel Gwyn,” if not just “Havel.”

Race: Human-Wyverian Crossbreed (believed to be half and half)
Age: 23

Bio:
Spoiler:

Appearance: Stout, stocky, wide set body type. Strong but with extra body weight.
Noticeably but not dramatically shorter than average (5’6”, ~168 cm).
Some Wyverian features. Four fingers and toes, small claws. Pointed ears, shifted down from where a human’s would be. Does NOT have different leg structure.
Bronze-Copper brown skin. Various little scars and imperfections, none particularly noticeable. Hands (and arms) are rough from labor.
Black, curly hair, relatively short (cannot readily see scalp). Full, thick beard that merges with his scalp, same thickness.
Resting expression seems smoldering.

Weapons:
Spoiler:

Starter Armor: Thickly layered Aptonoth hide. Also a recycled metal helmet, chest and back piece.
He intends to wear heavier armor as it becomes available to him.

Best Trait: Endurance
Being of a thicker body type, he’s generally more resilient to damage.

Worst Trait: Dexterity
Being a heavier person, it’s harder for him to accelerate and the like.

Please let me know if anything needs to be changed.

I like your character db.

Just as an update, I'm still waiting to start this RP because of any potential joiners. I want there to be at least four people participating. If it comes down to it, I may end up making my own character as well. I don't intend on giving my character any special advantage, to the contrary, I'd probably make him less effective for the sake of the rest of you. Anyhow, I do know of a few people who might want to join this, so I'll see what they say about it. Hopefully this can be started within the next week. I'd certainly like to see it kick off.
