Vs. Unknown Wyvern (MH)

Post by BizzarreCoyote on Tue Jul 12, 2016 12:49 pm

Greetings, everyone! It's been quite a while, but I'm gonna try and attempt to get an RPG going again! To commemorate Monster Hunter Generations' release, I figured I'd launch a Monster Hunter one, and see what kind of interest I can get.

"Ah, greetings Hunters." The Guildmaster from Pokke's Gathering Hall announced. "Please, have a seat, we have matters to discuss."

After waiting for the Hunters to take their seats, he pulled out a map of the swampy area at the base of the mountain. The map had several lines on it, each a different color.

"I'm willing to bet you've seen a map like this, but just in case you haven't, this is a trade route map." The wyverian said. "Red is mating season route, not a soul wants to be caught by a wyvern in heat. It's longer, but it's safer." He then traced his pudgy finger along the green line. "Green is the quickest route, usually coming from or going to Jumbo with emergency supplies. Blue is the most direct route to Minegarde, and yellow is the route that brings in the most money, coming all the way from Yukumo."

He sighed. "Ten zenny goes to whoever guesses the problem route, first two guesses don't count." The man said sourly. "The Yukumo route has been attacked, over and over. Roughly twenty caravans have attempted to come through, and we have two people to show for it. Both have said something about a shadow, then all Hell breaking loose. They haven't left the town yet, maybe you could get more info out of them, because 'a shadow, a screech, and then I booked it' isn't anything we can work with."

"Ordinarily, this is something we would send rookies to handle, but this is serious. Bring whatever it is that you want, you may need it."

Name:
Biography (Optional)
Weapon (Can be made of anything except Alatreon, the Raviente Trio, and the Fatalis Trio):
Armor (see above):
Race: Humans start out with one additional item slot.

Wyverians can more easily carry heavy items, and have +2 to any roll involving strength (Blocking, carrying something, swinging a hefty sword, so on). They are somewhat slower than humans, suffering a -1 to speed rolls.

Prowlers are swift and agile, gaining +2 to any rolls involving agility (ranged attacks, evading, squeezing through a gap, so on) but suffering a -2 to Strength rolls. They cannot use Hunter-sized equipment (no BFG9000s for cats)
Prowlers simply state if their weapon is impact or cutting. They may also select an element or status for their weapon, if they wish
(Prowler abilities will be detailed below)

Description of character:

Items (3 slots, unless Human, in which you have 4)
Item List:

Potion: Recovers 30 HP over 2 turns

Mega Potion: Recovers 50 HP over 4 turns

Antidote (2 per slot)

Small Barrel Bomb: Delivers flat damage to target, one turn timer

Bounce Bomb: Jumps up to hit aerial target, target receives flat damage

Smoke Bomb: Emits a cloud of smoke that obscures and hides most things inside it. Those outside the cloud take a massive penalty to accuracy when attempting to attack obscured targets, and the opposite is also true.

Flash Bomb: Thrown device that emits a bright flash. Unaware targets are blinded for two turns (including fellow Hunters).

Paint Bomb (6 per slot): Thrown shell that creates a bright pink trail for Hunters to follow

Lifepowder: Revives fallen ally (must be within 4 turns)

Large Barrel Bomb: Explodes when struck or set on fire, large blast radius, no defense roll for any in range. Can be moved after setting, acts as a Heavy item. If struck while carrying, it goes off in your arms.

Shock Trap: Small disk that emits a paralyzing pulse when triggered. Last 3 turns, Hunters can be affected if they happen to step on it. When immobilized, target has no defense roll.

Pitfall Trap: One turn to place. Target becomes ensnared, thrashing about wildly. Holds target for five turns, target has no defense roll while ensnared.

Large Barrel Bomb+: Explodes when struck or set on fire. Extreme blast radius. Targets inside cannot make a defense OR evade roll. Cannot be moved after set.

Weapons List:
SnS (+1 to guard actions and evade actions, only weapon allowed to use an item while unsheathed)

GS (Can charge up for a mighty Charged Slash, turns spent charging amplify strength of blow (to a point))

LS (Successive hits gain Spirit Points (up to 20), they can be used to increase the damage of your attacks; Cannot guard, +2 to evade.)

Charge Blade: Can transform between SnS and GS modes. Each successive strike in SnS mode charges one phial. When at five phials, user must discharge for use in GS mode, SnS attacks will bounce and deal no damage. User can empty phials one at a time, or all at once (one turn wind-up). Phial damage depends on element of Charge Blade. If CB has no element then impact damage is delivered, which can KO target if delivered to the head. +2 to guard if shield is charged.

DS (Two attacks for every attack command. Can demonize for 4 turns, doubling number of attacks per turn. After demonizing, cannot demonize for 5 turns. Cannot guard, +2 to evasions.)

SA (Can choose one phail (Poison, Power, Element, Para, or Dragon), which activates upon using the Phial Detonation attack. Attack needs two turns, user cannot move during. Phial must be manually reloaded afterwards.)

Hammer (Attacks targeting head have a chance to stun the target. Stunned target is completely immobile for a number of turns. Cannot guard.)

Hunting Horn (Can play songs to improve hunter's abilities, or be a detriment to the monster's own. Song effect determines how long it must be played, and hunter is mostly immobile during. The song can be canceled to evade, but then it must be started over. Cannot guard. Hunters select 3 songs they would like to play, GM determines difficulty based on effect.)

Lance (Can charge at a target, negating target's defense roll in exchange for only having a max attack roll of 15(anything above 15 will be counted as 15). +3 when guarding, -3 when evading)

Gunlance (Shelling attacks negate target's defense roll, in exchange for having a max roll of 15. Gunlances have 3 shells before needing to be reloaded. +3 when guarding, -3 when evading. Wyvern Fire attack auto-crits, but user must roll a 15 or above for it to connect. Wyvern Fire has a recharge of 10 turns.)

Weapon Status list
Spoiler:

Water/Fire/Thunder/Ice/Dragon: Deals matching elemental damage. If target is weak to element, +3. If target resists it, -3.

Para: Target requires several shells coated with this before it takes effect. When target is paralyzed, it cannot do anything, and has no evade roll. Target retains defense roll.

Poison: Provided the target is not poison immune, will poison target for damage over time effect (DoT). This DoT depends on the target.

Sleep: Target falls asleep after several strikes. If target is in the air, it suffers falling damage while still asleep. Next attack delivers 3x damage, ignoring defense and evade rolls. Target immediately goes into Rage after waking.

Blast: Requires five consecutive hits to trigger an explosion on-par with a Small Barrel Bomb+. This explosion only affects the target, and is incapable of catching others in the blast.

Light Bowgun (Can equip 5 types of shells, user picks one of those 5 to be a rapid-fire shell. Rapid Fire shells have 3 shots per magazine, non-rapid have 5. Cannot guard.)

Medium Bowgun (Can equip 4 types of shell. Has more punch than LBG, while being more mobile than HBG. Can equip a bayonet for added melee power in exchange for 1 shell type.)

Heavy Bowgun (Can equip 3 types of shell. Evasion is poor, though attack power is unrivaled. Can sacrifice one shell type to equip a shield instead, allowing guarding.)

Guarding with a bowgun, unless equipped with a shield, has a chance of damaging the gun.

Shell Types:

Normal: Run of the mill shot, delivers normal damage.

Pellet: Much like a shotgun shell, fires multiple pellets at a target. The pellets themselves deal little damage against armor, but shred exposed flesh. Potential for friendly fire, if ally is in front of your target. (Bonus vs. Unarmored targets, penalty vs. armored foes.)

Pierce: An armor-piercing round that ignores a large chunk of a target's armor, in exchange for having lower damage overall. Shape of shell causes it to pass through unprotected flesh with little issue, causing over-penetration. Extremely accurate. (Bonus vs. Armored Targets, penalty vs. unarm ored targets)

Fire/Thunder/Water/Ice/Dragon S: Like Normal S, but elemental.

Crag: An explosive shell on a timer, started on impact. Explodes after one turn, ignores armor.

Clust: A shell with 6 small bomblets inside. Each individual bomblet has less power individually than a Crag shot, and they likewise ignore armor. Possibility of friendly fire is high, as anything within melee range of the impact zone is targeted.

Wyvern Fire: Causes the bowgun to fire a large burst of wyvern flame, which ignores armor. User must get into melee range to use, and bowgun takes one turn to cool down afterwards. Unlike other shell types, all bowguns can only hold one Wyvern Fire shell before needing reload. Cannot be rapid-fired. Disgustingly powerful, may only have 5 of these shells.

Healing: Disperses a healing powder on impact, sealing smaller wounds and stymieing bleeding.

Demon: Causes the target's adrenal glands to overproduce, increasing attack power for three turns.

Armor: Slathers target's armor in a goo that quickly hardens into a thick shell, improving defensive capabilities. Headshot to human-sized target can asphyxiate, take care where you aim! Defense bonus absorbs 25 damage before shattering.

Status

Para: Target requires several shells coated with this before it takes effect. When target is paralyzed, it cannot do anything, and has no evade roll. Target retains defense roll.

Poison: Provided the target is not poison immune, will poison target for damage over time effect (DoT). This DoT depends on the target.

Sleep: Target falls asleep after several strikes. If target is in the air, it suffers falling damage while still asleep. Next attack delivers 3x damage, ignoring defense and evade rolls. Target immediately goes into Rage after waking.

Paint: If target attempts to escape, this shell will leave a trail of pink in the air for Hunters to follow.

Blast: Requires three consecutive hits to trigger an explosion on-par with a Small Barrel Bomb+. This explosion only affects the target, and is incapable of catching others in the blast.
Bow (Can pick one arrow type (Rapid, Spread, Pierce), and two coatings for it. Cannot guard, can melee with arrow.)

Bow Coatings:

Power: Increases velocity of arrows, increasing the power of the next shot.

Para: Target requires several arrows coated with this before it takes effect.

Paint: If target attempts to escape, this arrow will leave a trail of pink in the air for Hunters to follow.

Blast: Requires three consecutive hits to trigger an explosion on-par with a Small Barrel Bomb+. This explosion only affects the target, and is incapable of catching others in the blast.

Senryukon (Only impact weapon capable of guarding and only weapon capable of sprinting while out. Capable of unique "Ryuuki Release" attack, which causes stricken areas to explode. The more areas hit before its use, the greater the potential damage.)

Prowler Abilities:

Prowlers can select up to two abilities, depending on effect.

Herb Horn: Restores a small amount of HP (10-20) to any Hunters/Prowlers that hear it.

Demon Horn: A small increase in Strength (+1) to any Hunters/Prowlers that hear it. Lasts 2 turns.

Armor Horn: A small increase in Defense (+1) to any Hunters/Prowlers that hear it. Lasts 2 turns.

True Health Horn (2 slots): An immediate and great increase in HP (50-75) to any Hunters/Prowlers that hear it. Can only play it once every five turns.

Berzerker Horn (2 Slots): Turns even the wimpiest hunter into a hulking warrior. A great increase in strength (+3) for two turns, can only be played every five turns.

Fortress Horn (2 Slots): Any weapon that can guard will suddenly find that ability able to stop great wyverns cold. (+3 Defense) Lasts two turns, can only be played every five.

Wrath-of-Meow (requires 2 Prowlers): Build a tank from nearby objects. Construction takes two turns. Tank has 10 shots with the power of a Large Barrel Bomb, though is still fully capable of being used as cover for one hunter after ammunition is exhausted. Tank has 75 HP. Once used, cannot be used again for the rest of combat.

When in combat, you have two actions (unless stated otherwise). They can be spent on anything you want, but cannot be saved between turns.

This is a simplistic d20 system. Anything 10 and above is good, 9 and below is bad. The closer to 20/1 you are, the better/worse the results are.

For example:

Hunter guards against a charging Barroth. He rolls a 9. He's thrown to the floor and suffers minor bruises (-5 HP)

Hunter guards against a charging Barroth. He rolls a 1. His shield buckles and the hunter is tossed forwards several meters into the air. He hits the ground and, despite his armor, feels several ribs shatter. He gasps in pain and cannot move. (-50 HP, loses next turn, -2 Strength until return to town.)

Hunter guards against a charging Barroth. He rolls a 20. He is in the perfect position to deflect the charge away from him, causing the Barroth to instead charge into a very, very solid rock. Its crown shatters, and it falls over, dazed. (Barroth -35HP, loses next turn)

I'm also completely out to not out to kill you. If your unconscious body can be hauled back to town (if you decide to retreat), you can be revived.

Of course, the end of this campaign, when victory can be claimed, is when your target is defeated. Killed or simply captured is up to the players.

Sure I will give a crack at it.  Greetings everyone.  I need to set email notifications so I can see when thread update.  Should make it easier to keep up.

Name: Heavy Rook

Race: Wyverian
Build: 2.2 meters tall (7 feet) ~ 127kg (280 pounds)
Bio: About 50 years ago, at the young age of 35, Heavy Rook left the Wyverian Hub on a journey of self reflection.  Growing up the only child of a very protective and peaceful family, Rook was discouraged from leaving the confines of civilization and rarely left the walls of the hub.  He had sought to travel and experience the joys of the ocean, the deserts, caverns, meadows, tundras, and volcanoes.  He desired to connect with the nature he was born into.  Unfortunately, this was beyond his power due to family constraints for the first 25 years of his life, while the next seven years bid him stay and care for his ailing mother who eventually succumbed to her affliction.

During these early years he explored another of his great interests: pyrotechnics.  He loved to make fireworks and create beautiful explosions, seeking to provide beauty to light up the skies of the Wyverian Hub on the nights of festivals and holidays.  After years of tinkering, he has developed a deep expertise of uses for gunpowders and munitions which has provided for both recreational use and the city's anti-wyvern defenses.  He made a name for himself among those in his city and many of the realm's big merchants for his unique affinity for multi-purpose gunpowders and gaining the moniker by which he is best known, Kaboom.

Seeing his mother's life cut short from a terminal disease with no known cause, he vowed not to die without accomplishing his dreams.  Whether the illness was or was not genetic or an epidemic he would face in his old age he did not know.  Nonetheless, he planned to die on his own terms, accepting the death that fate promises him at the end of his journey.  Heavy Rook received his family's blessing to experience the world, and prepared to embark on a journey he may never return from.

Seeking originally to simply travel, Heavy Rook soon learned that without his wits, a weapon, and the know-how to survive in nature at her cruelest, his fated death would come long before his fledgling journey could test its wings.  Seeking to use his gunpowders and his size and strength to his advantage, Heavy Rook designed one of the first functional gunlances, using and tweaking blueprints he once received from his dealing with foreign merchants.  After his final three years preparing himself and improving the functionality of his gunlance, Heavy Rook set out to see the world.

Presently, at the prime age of 85, Heavy Rook's travels have lead him throughout the realm, and he has grown fond of his travels and his connection with the beauty of nature's peaceful landscapes and its extreme climates.  He has hunted a fair share of wyverns alongside a sleu of history's better and worse hunters, often doing so to protect the lives of those who cannot enjoy the world outside their village as he has due to the dangers of hostile creatures.  He continues to seek new ways to improve his gunlance, a labor of love in the making which has seen many changes, many redesigns, and much refurbishment throughout his decades of travel.

He arrives in Pokke a few days prior to the events of the current day to enjoy the snowy mountains, having just returned to the village from a few days voyage to the mountain summit, seeking a brief respite before seeking his next adventure.  When the call to hunt this unidentified wyvern catches his eye, he decides to stick around and see how he may be of aid in this endeavor.

Armor: He has a customized set of armor using a mix of carefully crafted parts of shrouded Nerscylla with fortifications in the joints using black gravios body shells.  They provide steadyness for withstanding the blasts of his weapon as well as the jaws of his prey yet without hampering his movement too harshly.

Item List:
~Potion
~Large Barrel Bomb
~Pitfall Trap

Weapon List:
~Customized mixed metal gunlance, using a base of iron and carbalite, a barrel of titanium, a blade of Eltalite, and a chamber utilizing firecell stones and reworked gravios inferno sacs.
~Carving knife made of Dragonite

Can I have a little bit of a range on how much I can/should bring in terms of items?  I would like to be realistic and conservative while still being properly prepared.
(EDIT): I did not see the collapse menu under items.  I'll update this shortly.
How many slots do I have access to?  I am unsure on the details.

If you have any concerns regarding the character feel free to let me know and I can make adjustments.

As you are a Wyverian, you have 3 item slots. If, for whatever reason, the hunt is cut short and you return to town, you may replenish/change your items.

I'm tempted to say no to the Longsword, but I'll deliberate on it.

You are welcome to say no to the longsword. I added it because I thought the requirement for a weapon (list) suggested I would want some sort of backup weapon. If I am not too prone to losing my mainhand you can nix the longsword.

Then in that case, nix the LS. Pick your 3 items, and you're good to go.

This site is a sight for sore eyes. I had pretty much given up hope on any sort of revival after minegarde went down for good.
Hope i'm allowed to join

Name: Whiskers
Biography: Originally a wild felyne, Whiskers lived anything but a peaceful life. In fact he may well have been the origin of the saying curiosity killed the cat. He couldn't help it though, he knew there was so much more to the world than just the area around his village. There was always something new, something exciting, something that let him feel alive, that it didn't matter if he got into danger.
Then one day he finally worked up the courage to leave the village for good, bringing with him what little he could carry. That was when he stumbled upon a small group of hunters. They were fighting with some monster, but Whiskers didn't even notice what it was. He was entranced by the hunters, despite being in a life threatening situation they were all grinning. He could see the adrenaline coursing through them. As silently as he could manage he followed them back to their guild where he managed to convince them to let him join and he's been there ever since.
Weapon: Cutting (Paralyze)
Armor: Guild
Race: Prowler
Items:
Mega Potion
Flashbomb
Lifepowder

Prowler Ability:
True Health Horn

Sun, I forgot to mention that you can also select an element for your weapon, I apologize. I'll wait for a few more entrants, then start this thing.

As mentioned, it's a simplistic d20 system.

Just two? Hm. I'll wait for Andras to get back from vacation to start, because I know he wants in.

Now, if your character is KIA, feel free to roll up another character for if when the group gets back to town. I'm fairly certain I've covered most of my bases, but if there's any questions you have, now would be an excellent time to ask them.

Starting off with just us four (including you as gm) is probably for the best. It will make the game flow faster as we will have less people to wait on that might go mia for too long.

Hey there,
I read through all the sign up and game thread stuff, so I think I'm caught up.

I dunno if you're still taking in players at the moment.
If you are, dunno how you'd want my character to be thrown in. Initially thought the 'wait for me!' routine, but you already pulled that yourself. :-P
A thought was my character showing up to town looking for work, catching wind of the mission, and then chasing down the wagon (if reasonable).
Or just happening to be in the area, or with the group the whole time...

Seems we have the speedster Prowler Palico Felyne, the tank Wyverian, and the gunner human.
If you had any particular needs, I could try to accommodate. Otherwise, I can throw something together (got a rough idea in mind).

But yeah, lemme know if you're still taking players in. :-P

Holy hell, it's DB. Yeah, I think we can sneak your character in somehow.

Sorry for my delay in getting a character up.
I have most of it written. I should have it up by the end of the weekend.

Name: Morrigan
Gender: Female
Race: Human

Weapon:
Demon Halberd (Rajang LS)
Armor: Rajang Shin
Items: Potion, Mega Potion, Lifepowder, Antidote (x2)

Appearance:
Morrigan is a blonde haired woman somewhere in her thirties, standing a little taller than average for her gender. She has the build of a balanced hunter, though leaning some towards agility; well muscled but not to the point of bulk, and with minimal extra body weight. Though roughed up in some placed, her femininity is still intact, such as her long hair that compliments her armor nicely. She’s notably active, rarely sitting still, and carries herself with self assuredness. While friendly enough, she can also be distant, hiding away her weaknesses. A wild and rougher side also comes to surface, usually during a fight.

History:

Like so many orphans, Morrigan aspired to be a Monster Hunter someday, believing herself capable of better things. During her otherwise mundane childhood she did what she could to prepare herself, which was primarily sneaking off to conduct her own little hunts. Her lucky day came when some wild animals wandered into town and started causing trouble and she contributed to putting them down. A hunter passing through caught wind of the event and acknowledged her, and during conversation she let slip about her hobby.

The hunter saw what she was getting at, and eventually took her on his travels as his apprentice. He was from the East, so she learned an Eastern style of fighting (and her equipment was crafted in the East). His teachings of Monster Hunting were very much focused on the actual fighting aspect, rather than survival information or strategic planning, which suited her interest anyway, which she maintains today. She became more experienced while her master grew older, and eventually she left him to embark on her own ventures.

~

Alright, finally. I think I covered everything needed. (Let me know if not.)

I might as well ask this now: Would you be alright if I invoked a little bit of ariel style? Plus maybe some insect staff-esque pole vaulting. (Noticed they weren’t included in the list.)
Really just as a style thing, not expecting any advantages. I just want to make sure I’m not breaking how realistic you were shooting for.

As for an intro, if it’s alright with you, I was gonna go with the idea of: She came into town just as another stop in her travels, but the guild people were like “you should go with these guys,” so she went after them to catch up.
Not sure if that'd be within the level of realism.

I was actually going to have you come in from the Yukumo side with pretty much the same idea.

And yes, do whatever you like. Stick to one style, combine them, the die determines success after all. Just keep in mind you have two action points, and if you're in the air with no points, you just fall to the ground with no real fanfare.

Which direction on the map you've drawn would the Yukumo path be? (North, east, west?)
Sorry if that's something I should be aware of.

Would she just be trekking it alone (trying to intercept), or would she have been escorting another wagon (with other hunters?)?

Even if you reply right away, I probably won't get a post up tonight. It is a priority on my to do list though.

North, and probably alone. It seems like you've built a solo hunter, and Yukumo wouldn't be stupid enough to send another cart. If you would prefer an NPC companion, I can whip one up.

Wow, Blaster, long time no see! Seeing as I let DB jump in, I don't mind you jumping in. I've been waiting for one of my players for a month+ anyway

It has been awhile. I was surprised when I saw that Minegarde had been shut down. But hopefully, this site can still be brought back to life.
I'll get to work on a charatcer, and should have one whipped up and posted sometime tomorrow. How will I be worked in?

Here's my character. Sorry about the wall of text background.

Name - Tristan
Race - Human
Appearance - Long black hair, typically worn in a warrior’s tail. Has more gentle facial features, with laugh lines easily visible. He has scars at various points across his body, including one on his face that stretches from his middleright forehead, angling slightly left down his nose and ending just to the left of his mouth.

Background - Tristan is your stereotypical hunter, having always dreamed of taking up the art all his childhood. He was just forced into it at an earlier age than others, when a Chameleos attacked and destroyed his town.

After that, at 14 he joined the hunters guild, and began vigorously training, day and night. Two years later, he started hunting for real. He took the hunting world by storm, rising rapidly through the ranks as he put his training to good use.

Finally, shortly after he turned 18, the quest he’d been waiting for appeared: Chameleos. The same one that had destroyed his home had surfaced again, and attacked another town. He took the quest, not out of an urge for revenge, but out of a sense of duty. A duty to make sure the monster that destroyed his home didn’t do so again.

Right out of the gates, the hunt went sour. As soon as they arrived in the ransacked town, the Chameleos burst through a building, wiping out one of the hunters he came with before he could act. The other two fell shortly after, leaving Tristan alone against the beast.

He knew he couldn’t give up. If he retreated, the Chameleos would vanish again. If he fell, the Chameleos would vanish again. He had to succeed. After a long and gruelling battle, he finally slew his opponent. Bleeding from several cuts, a scar on his face, and a couple broken ribs, he went back to the guild, armor ripped, torn and in disarray, to report the quest complete.

He had armor and weapons forged from his slain foe, and after a few months rest, continued his hunting career, this time doing his best to see everyone survive. A few years later, he heard tell of the many caravan attacks by a strange monster, and decided he would investigate.

Personality - Typically jovial and cheerful, he’s always optimistic. During battle, he becomes notably serious; after all, it is a matter of life and death.

Weapon - Dual Chameleos (DB), Poison
Armor - Mizuha X (The 4U G-Rank one, not the wizardy one)
Items - Potion, Mega Potion, Lifepowder x2

Is this alright? Also, as to how I could be worked in, how about this: Tristan arrives as the others leave, and as soon as he accepts the quest, hurries after them. Would that work?

You'll take the Pokke path, yeah. It'll take you roughly an in-game turn to get to the battlefield, I'll just say you were prepping for it in your room and they, well...left you. As for your equipment, you're fine.

Oh wow, hey Blaster. "Been awhile," yeah, probably a year or two I would guess.

If you're looking to catch up on how everyone's doing, should check out this thread.

See you soon in the game though. (Looks like things are moving again.)
